My inspiration is found in the natural world and daily life. I am particularly drawn to detail and textures. Printmaking, especially etching lends itself well to those passions. My etchings made on copperplates using a variety of traditional methods and largely hand-colored.

I will be demonstrating pulling a print and drawing on a plate. Visitors will be welcome to participate in the process! Sketchbooks and process development will be on display along with finished pieces.

My printmaking studio is  entered through the garage and down concrete stairs to the basement.

Kathy King, a potter and painter, raised a Kansas girl, but calls Monroe, Wisconsin home for 42 years. Retired from teaching Art at Monroe High School 2019. King's pottery all starts at the potter’s wheel, throwing forms to become functional pieces, parts of a sculpture and on occasion mixing media. Her pieces tell a story from life around her, a memory or her imagination. Reoccurring themes of the figure and “as the crow flies” dominate her work. Her work is oxidation fired at cone 6, Wood fired at cone 10 or Raku depending on the piece or time of year. She spends a lot of time creating forms that please her, never has considered herself a production potter, each piece is unique and a one of a kind piece. She strives to make sure each piece's surface imagery tells a visual story. The handle on each mug feels good in her hand, the lip of each piece is just the right thickness, Her figures tell a story with the expression on their faces and their body posture. Even though none of her pieces are perfect she continues to strive for perfection. Her functional pieces are all food, dishwasher & microwave safe.
Since retiring in the spring of 2019 she can be found in her studio painting or throwing pottery, teaching a workshop at Grandview or Adamah Art Studio’s. Awards include: 1st place People's Choice Award 2020,Best of show 2021 Stoughton, WI Art Walk, Spring Green, WI 2022 1st Place Best in Pottery category, Art Fair off the Square Madison, WI 2022 & 2023 1st Place Best in Pottery category

Kathy views the surface of her pieces as a canvas for storytelling. Using underglazes, glazes, and a technique called sgraffito, she draws, carves, and manipulates each piece to reflect its narrative. Kathy will have on hand the tools she use as well as demonstrating the sgraffito techniques you see on most of her pieces.
